What is Creative Drama?

Drama is derived from the Greek word dran, which means 'to do something' and 'to play'. In essence, creative drama aims to deal with human and human society relations. In the creative drama process, people embark on their own development journey with other group members without feeling pressures such as being admired or despised. In this journey, people develop themselves by educating and walk without being bound by a scenario. There is no role, the imagination and knowledge of the participant make up their improvisation.

The Importance of Creative Drama

In creative drama, like many rituals in closed groups, people try to carve their own raw stone and contribute to the temple of humanity. However, unlike the 'advice' or 'exam' systems in other groups in creative drama, the principle of volunteering also makes the participant feel more free. In this way, the individual develops his/her self-confidence in awareness of his/her own limits through the activities he/she participates in. Development gains momentum by being supported by one's imagination and creativity.

Benefits of Creative Drama

Creative drama is very effective in the development of the participant. The skills gained in this development process also gain the self-confidence to be calm in the face of future problems and crises, to produce solutions, and to lead the communities. It also provides the participant with the ability to organize and plan, especially in solving the problems faced by communities where mutual attitudes and behaviors can affect each other. The education process removes the individual from individuality, improves his language skills and enables him to use written and verbal communication correctly in the communities he participates in.

Characteristics of Creative Drama

Creative drama places the concept of 'we' instead of 'me' in its participants. Participants are guided by a leader who is an expert in his field and has the competence to analyze the process. During these orientations, the leader encourages the creativity of the participants with result-oriented and non-strict rules. Patience and tolerance are gracefully reminded to the group members as they achieve their achievements. Creative drama constitutes a whole with its four basic components consisting of leader, participant, place and subject.

Areas of Use of Creative Drama

Creative drama is unfortunately used by individuals in social life in line with their interests. People use creative drama uncontrollably against people and do not hesitate to hurt the other person by deviating the truth. This situation leads us to several different beginnings in social or social life. First; The individual needs therapy support in groups separated due to uncontrolled and undeserved pressures. With the support of experienced leaders, it is aimed to eliminate these traumas and lack of self-confidence and to bring the individual back to social life. At the second point, the individual participates in the activities of his own free will and is guided by experienced leaders, and it is aimed to discover his creativity and self-discovery. Another and most importantly, it enables our children, who are our letters to the future, to determine the right role models in the society and to put themselves in the place of those role models.

Creativity and Creative Drama

Creative drama supports the creativity of the participant and encourages them to enrich the activities with their personal experiences. This adventure enables the individual to transform his treasure, which he is not aware of with matter and meaning, into a unique work together with the members of the group. The individual transforms his adult knowledge, reinforced by his longing for play from his childhood, into a permanent achievement with individual creativity, tolerance of the group and creative dreary directions of the leader.

What Are We Aiming With Creative Drama Education?

In Creative Drama, which can also be defined as learning by doing and experiencing, animations and improvisations are made based on the participants' own lives and experiences. There are no elements to evoke theater such as texts, audience, and decor prepared for adults participating in the studies. As the participants can do animations freely, they do not have right or wrong definitions for the animations. The participant can also be a listener when necessary.

During improvisations, an abstract or concrete situation, a newspaper clipping, a picture, a cartoon, an unfinished poem or text can form the outline of the subject to be processed. The participants, who make improvisations by dividing into groups among themselves, also improve their empathy, communication and self-expression skills by benefiting from each other's perspectives.
